Key Meeting with Tourism Stakeholders in Guyana and Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) of the UK
On May 13, 2024, a pivotal meeting was held at the Guyana Marriott Hotel Georgetown, bringing together key tourism stakeholders from Guyana and representatives from the Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) of the UK. The event was dedicated to supporting the growth of tourism and hospitality in Guyana. The meeting commenced with opening remarks from Mr. Keon Smith, Training Director of ActionINVEST Caribbean Inc. (ACI), who underscored the significance of collaboration and training in advancing the tourism sector. This was followed by Dr. Vishnu Doerga, Chairman and Business Development Director of ACI, who elaborated on the collaborative efforts between the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), ACI, and CTH. Mrs. Dee George, President of THAG, delivered opening remarks at the presentation, expressing gratitude to CTH for their ongoing efforts. She highlighted the importance of continuous training in the industry and reaffirmed THAG’s commitment to training and inspiring students to pursue careers in hospitality. Mr. Steve Beckworth, Director of Marketing and Business Development at CTH, delivered an informative presentation to the tourism stakeholders. He outlined CTH’s ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing skillsets within the hospitality industry, with the support of ACI. CTH currently offers the Level 3 Foundation in Tourism and Hospitality and announced plans to introduce courses featuring short practical skills focused on Level 2 Housekeeping, Level 2 Restaurant/Bar Services, and the Front Office. These courses aim to provide practical, job-ready skills to students, furthering their career prospects in the hospitality industry. During the event, Mr. Beckworth also presented awards to CTH's first Gold Employers in Guyana. This program connects trained students with potential employers within the industry. The recognized Gold Employers are Guyana Marriott Hotel Georgetown, collected by Mr. Eduardo Reple, General Manager; Evergreen Adventures, collected by Ms. Shebana Daniels, Multi-Destination Tour Coordinator; Grand Coastal Hotel, collected by Ms. Kayleigh Gomes, Team Member, Ramada Georgetown Princess Hotel. These esteemed establishments are all members of THAG and have demonstrated excellence in their contributions to the industry. The event was well-attended by managers, leaders, strategic partners, and organizations in the tourism and education sectors, marking a significant step towards strengthening the tourism and hospitality landscape in Guyana through strategic partnerships and high-quality training.
