Mabaruma Hospital launched under Smart Health Care Facilities Caribbean Project

The Mabaruma Smart Hospital, located in Barima-Waini, Region One, was launched as part of the Smart Health Care Facilities Caribbean Project. Facilitated by the Government of Guyana and the United Kingdom (UK), this collaborative initiative was further developed by UK Aid, and executed by the Pan American Health Organization/ World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO). His Excellency Dr. Irfaan Ali, at today’s opening ceremony, praised the transformation of the healthcare system and the commitment of healthcare professionals: “As I speak to you now we are working on many other collaborative partnerships with partners across the world to bring even more training for you, taking your game a bit higher because smart hospital is just one part of the equation. We need smart people, we need a smart type of thinking, we need a smart approach, and we need a smart vision. All of this will allow the facility itself to be optimally utilised when all of us collectively re-strategise and rethink how we deliver health care. So we hope that these investments will continue to make a strong impact on the lives of people.” The Mabaruma Smart Hospital, retrofitted at a cost of US $750 000, is just one of these outstanding healthcare investments. The new smart facilities include an Accident and Emergency (A&E) department, a renovated recovery room, a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a refurbished kitchen, a sterilisation room, and two surgical theatres. With a further GYD $125 billion dollars, Region One and the Hinterland are anticipating the modernisation of other treatment facilities. This includes the Lethem, Kato, Mahdia, Kamarang, Mabaruma, Moruca, Bartica and Port Kaituma communities.
