Hatching egg industry to support poultry sector and develop agroprocessing in Guyana
In the 2022 national budget, some $28.7 billion was allocated towards the development of agriculture and agroprocessing to garner exponential growth of the non-oil economy. To remain a self-sustaining, resilient sector, the Government of Guyana is keen on meeting the 25% by 2025 Reduction in the Regional Food Bill, and shielding against supply shortages. Given Guyana’s extensive footprint on the regional and international agriculture markets, the hatching egg industry will not only bolster the poultry industry, but may vastly reduce some $350 million expended on 52 million eggs annually. According to Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, “We are working with a company in Brazil to start and GLDA [Guyana Livestock Development Authority] is working aggressively. I am hoping in the new year we can launch that project and start producing our own hatching eggs and be self-sufficient.” To concur, H.E. President Irfaan Ali stated, “These are the initiatives that will bring direct benefits to the farmer and enhance our diversification programme, these are some of the initiatives that will ensure our economy is built on many pillars.” While this initiative is still under development, the Government has also undertaken several other agricultural plans, one such being a consortium of commercial-scale poultry producers who are encouraged to grow livestock feed, primarily corn and soya.
