Maritime Sector Modernization Gains Momentum

During the commissioning ceremony of the new pilot boat, Arapaima, at the Coast Guard Wharf in Georgetown on Wednesday, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Dr. Irfaan Ali, stated that his government is prioritizing the modernization of the country's maritime sector due to its significant contribution to the country's economic development. President Ali emphasized the crucial role played by the maritime sector in facilitating global trade, with ships transporting 80% of traded goods worldwide and 90% in Guyana, according to UNCTAD. Given Guyana's coastal location and dependence on shipping for imports and exports, the modernization of the maritime sector is essential for achieving the country's economic goals. President Ali stated that the transformation of the sector is progressing rapidly with the cooperation of the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), and that modernization efforts will contribute to the expansion of the country's economy, facilitate increased trade and commerce, and enhance maritime safety. Guyanese President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, has commissioned a new pilot boat, the Arapaima, which is a part of the seven-pronged approach his government has taken to modernize the country's maritime sector. The President stated that the acquisition of the Arapaima is a continuation of the government's efforts to provide the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) with modern and reliable vessels that are fuel-efficient and meet the needs of the shipping community. The boat has a modern navigation system that meets international standards and is designed to use 30% less fuel and reach destinations faster. The seven-pronged approach includes updating hydrographical charts, improving marine and navigation aids, strengthening MARAD's capacity to manage the sector, improving port management, and enhancing maritime security through the implementation of new standards and protocols. Over $1 billion has been invested in marine navigation aids in the past two years, and $1 billion has been allocated for the acquisition of a new tug for MARAD, with $200 million for new equipment, and an additional $400 million for the reconstruction of the Vreed-en-Hoop Buoys and Beacons facility. Port Georgetown has undergone significant upgrades and improvements with new technology and infrastructure, and there will be additional pilot boats added to the current fleet to meet the sector's demands. The President expressed confidence in MARAD's ability to meet the demands of the numerous port development projects currently underway and in the pipeline. The government has allocated significant resources towards modernising the maritime sector and implementing a strategic perspective for its development. Measures are being taken to protect the waters from pollution and harmful activities, and investments are being made in human resources to ensure effective management of the sector. Additionally, the government is exploring the use of riverways as "express highways" for emergency responses.
